UO’s Wood begins term on ASLO’s board of directors

Michelle WoodMichelle Wood, professor of biology and director of the Center for Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, is serving on the board of directors of the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO).

ASLO, founded in 1948, is the world’s largest organization devoted to promoting aquatic sciences. Wood, whose term ends in 2011, recently returned from her first board meeting, which was held during the society’s annual meeting in Nice, France.

“We had more than 2,000 registrants, about two thirds from Europe, which meant there was great opportunity for international mixing and for European students to participate in the society’s activities,” Wood said. “We have a number of programs to help early career scientists and students.”

ASLO is known for Limnology and Oceanography, which ranks as a top journal in the field of aquatic sciences. The society also publishes the online journal L&O; Methods and sponsors other events and online resources devoted to furthering public understanding of science and the application of sound aquatic science to public policy.

Wood also is serving on the society’s International Organizing Committee, which is planning for the 2010 Ocean Science meeting in Portland, Ore., which could attract 4,000 oceanographers.
